phool market.....

Walking down the road from dadar station on sunday morning, i notice a road or a whole market literally, selling flowers, the kinds that are used as offerings in temples, in darghas...so many people haggling over prices, bargaining, making an occupation out of this flower business...i walk further down the road i notice this lady, very carefully, painstakingly choosing a garland, for her favorite deity perhaps...and it just gets me thinking.....

Religion, it is entwined(or should i say entangled, i'm not sure!) in every fabric of our society..everwhere we go, it is staring right back at us in some form or the other.People take so much time, so much effort, spend so much money to nurture this passion/obsession/weakness, what should i call it? What is this human tendency that makes us so desperately cling on to this belief, that we need this super power, this mighty force behind us, looking over us?Not that i dont believe in this super power.I do.What i dont understand is this constant need to glorify, and enshrine Him in the name of religion. This need, that makes people so blind, that they perform the most ridiculous sounding tasks, from donating large amounts of money to sacrificing fellow human beings even, all in the name of religion..This the one common factor, that binds so many, the most notorious don to a pious priest, from a homeless beggar to a high flying executive, they all believe, or want to anyway.....

Just imagine, the same time, money, effort, and thought, spent in another way...say in helping a cause...saving the planet, finding a miraculous cure, or just in bettering our own lives and of those around us anyway...just imagine..for it is after all, just a thought!

I wouldnt say that you are totally wrong.. but I think you refuse to see the point of view of the other person there... the one who sees the deity as a moral support, the one who does live the right path in life inspite of the many other lucrative wrong ones he encounters everyday because he believes that his religion (which is the easiest way for most people with the literacy and awareness levels you see in our country to deal with the concept of god) does not allow it, the one who finds him/herself relieved from the stresses of everyday life by praying (which for most people would be the best and easiest way of meditating or else disciplining oneself - as in case of namaz).. the bigger picture does exist, my dear friend...

i agree with you..religion does serve some purpose, but my point is that how can people put soooo much into it, that everything else acquires secondary status?that their lives revolve around it?its not religion that i'm against, but i feel that if the same effort that people put into this, even if some of is channalised in some other directions, maybe we could have a more productive society as whole!
